Credit Value: 20 CAT points
Course participants can be accredited by Manchester Metropolitan University with 20 CAT points at either postgraduate or undergraduate level. For details see “Unit Handbook” and “CAT Points and Manchester Metropolitan University Awards” below.
This Unit, which is delivered over 4 x 1 day sessions, is a general overview of the use of Assistive Technology (AT) to Support Communication and Learning. It covers the issues involved when assessing people’s needs for AT and critically reviews some of the available hardware and software solutions and their implementation.
The Assistive Technology Unit will focus on the following areas:
Assessment:
Consideration is given to the key principles and practices in the assessment and implementation process for AT.
Access and Positioning:
The range of access methods and devices are covered, as are the principles to determine which access method is the most appropriate for an individual.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC):
This section covers an introduction to AAC Systems, their features, access methods and when and how to use them.
Recording and Retrieving Information using symbols, other images, sound and text:
In this section a range of supportive software for recording and retrieving information is considered. This is looked at from the areas of physical, sensory and learning support.

*If course participants are studying for an award at undergraduate (H Level) there will be an additional fee payable to Manchester Metropolitan University, this is currently approximately £220 per award but is subject to change.
